From the very first contact [my husband] felt understood, as we were in crisis mode. Really outstanding services. Thank you so much to the Birthways ladies. We so appreciate your help during a particularly difficult time.

Our Story

Birthways was founded in 1997 by Karen Laing, who was previously the director of Illinois’ first fledging doula group, Dana Mothercare (DM).  DM was owned and founded by Nancy Newton and Bill Brauer, groundbreaking professionals whose approach integrated mindfulness in home-based care.  When DM’s founders moved on to other projects and closed the organization, Karen gathered the doulas and founded a new company.  Some of the original DM’s doulas are still a part of Birthways today!

Our Story Image

We had a great experience with [our doula]. She took great care of our newborn son and was very helpful when we had questions.

Everyone I spoke to at Birthways before and after my son's birth helped me feel like there was a community of women who were genuinely interested in helping my family get off to a smooth start, both with the birth and beyond. I am so grateful!

About Birthways Doulas

Birthways has been helping families find the right doula “fit” since 1997. Our training, professional development, and experience – all exceeding any national doula certification guidelines – ensure the support that best meets your unique needs.

Birthways is not a referral agency, and all Birthways doulas are our employees. We aren’t just calling through a list of doulas who have registered with us. Instead, our intensive hiring, screening, training, and ongoing support system ensure the highest quality, evidence-based care for your family.

About BW Doulas Image

[Our doula] was great. She respected my husband’s desire to be my coach and knew when to step back . . . She gave massage, tied my hair back, brought me ice chips, and really just helped meet all my needs. She made sure I was clear on decisions that were being presented to us and helped us make decisions without being biased.  It was a great experience.
