Benefits

The benefits of the continuous support of a trained labor support person is well documented. Both low and high risk women have better outcomes when a doula is present.

In 2006 the Cochrane Review compiled multiple studies totaling 14 trials and  involving more than 5000 women.  The summary validated these findings about the continuous presence of a doula in labor:

  • Reduced likelihood of medication for pain relief
  • Reduced cesarean deliveries
  • Reduced instrumental deliveries
  • Higher Apgar scores for infants
  • Reduction  in labor duration
  • Improved satisfaction

[Our doula’s] postpartum support has been such a gift. I especially appreciate her calm, positive energy and her ability to help me accept her help. She finds ways of helping that I wouldn’t have thought of on my own, which takes the pressure off me and allows me to really make the most of her time with us.
