Apprentice Doulas

Apprentice doulas provide cost-effective labor support for families open to working with a doula that has received her basic training and is well-supported but has experienced fewer births than our senior level doulas. You can request an experience level that meets your needs and budget.

Your Birthways apprentice doula:

Has successfully completed her core training. She has attended training courses through a nationally recognized certifying organization such as DONA.

Has attended 1-25 births. Although the number of births she has attended is lower than our senior doulas, all of our doulas work closely as a group and learn from the experiences of others.

Is well supported. Every apprentice doula is paired with a senior doula for mentoring. Your doula can call on her senior doula to answer questions or get additional support 24/7. You benefit from these layers of support and can also directly call a senior doula or midwife for guidance.

As she is supported to meet our learning objectives and become a senior doula, she offers families her developing skills and compassionate care. She may have achieved many of the accomplishments of the senior doula.

[Our apprentice doula] was amazing. I really don't think we could have done this without her. She was so helpful in instructing me on positioning and breathing. She was calm, warm and encouraging.  She helped me to have the labor I wanted. When I think about [our son's] birth, I feel proud, happy and amazed by what I was able to do. [Our doula] made this awesome experience possible for us and I will recommend her to friends and strangers in a heartbeat.
